The aircraft flew exactly as we expected – no surprises. The fuel works so well, all I needed to do was fly the plane.
- U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Tom Weaver, after flying demonstration flight fueled by camelina-based biojet fuel on April 22, 2010.
Nearly 12 million barrels a day. That’s how much foreign oil we import in America.
Meanwhile, farm input costs continue to increase.
Sustainable Oils was created to address both challenges. The company develops new crops that produce oil here at home. As ingenious and industrious as our farmers, Sustainable Oils focuses on crops that use less moisture and fewer inputs to give growers the opportunity to produce a profitable crop even on marginal land.
Camelina is just such a crop, a unique oilseed that takes little moisture but is well-suited for biofuel production.
Our commitment to research enables our success and yours. We’ve built North America’s largest camelina research program with field testing locations across the U.S. and Canada to improve camelina yield, oil characteristics and agronomic practices.
Sustainable Oils has also led efforts to build a sustainable camelina industry for growers and end-users. We’ve built a network of growers, seed producers and dealers and established protocols for crop management, seed production and oil processing. We’ve worked with industry partners to build markets for camelina meal and developed partnerships to serve the exciting new aviation biofuels market.

RAND Report on Biofuels Grossly Inaccurate
01-26-2011
Sustainable Oils forcefully disagrees with the findings of a report issued by the RAND Corporation on January 25, 2011, titled “Alternative Fuels for Military Applications.” Among other findings, the report states that the military should abandon efforts to create jet fuel from sustainable biomass crops, including camelina.
During the past two years, Sustainable Oils and our partner UOP, a Honeywell Company, have produced more than 300,000 gallons of jet fuel from camelina crops grown sustainably in Montana. This fuel has powered several ground, marine and in-flight tests of various aircraft, including the A10 Warthog (Air Force), the FA-18 (Navy) and a MH 60S Sea Hawk helicopter (Navy). Our company has produced more renewable jet fuel than any other company, any other technology and any other feedstock.
High oil content, low fertilizer requirements and co-product use combine for low carbon footprint
Bozeman, Mont (December 1, 2010) - A life cycle analysis of the carbon footprint of camelina-based biojet fuel concludes that the renewable fuel reduces CO2 emissions by 75 percent compared to traditional petroleum-based jet fuel, according to a peer-reviewed paper published in the journal Environmental Progress & Sustainable Energy. The study also found that “green” diesel made through the same process reduces CO2 emissions by 80 percent.

Earth Day test is first supersonic flight to use 50-50 camelina-based, traditional jet fuel mix
April 23, 2010 - Bozeman, MT - Sustainable Oils, a producer of renewable, low carbon and domestically produced camelina-based fuels, supplied the camelina-based biojet fuel that successfully powered yesterday's Earth Day test flight of the U.S. Navy's F/A-18 “Green Hornet” aircraft. Taking place at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Patuxent River, Maryland, the flight was the first to demonstrate the performance of a 50-50 blend of camelina-based biojet fuel and traditional petroleum-based jet fuel at supersonic speeds. Yesterday's use of this camelina-based fuel, which was produced by Honeywell's UOP using its renewable jet fuel process technology, marks a significant milestone in the certification and operational use of camelina-based biofuels in military aircraft.
